Supernova 2009ip in NGC 7259

This page is devoted to information on Supernova 2009ip in NGC 7259.   Basic information on this SN, including the last reported brightness, on this Supernova can be found on the main page.  Information on the original web pages for many of these images can be found on the updates and links web pages.

image Discovered by CHASE (Chili).   This one turned out to be an LBV ( Luminous Blue Variable), similar to an Eta Carinae type event, and not a supernova.   If you read the attached ATEL you will see that this object went through a brightening phase, similar to that of Eta Carinae before it's great eruption of 1843.   We have a DSS Photometry reference image made by Odd Trondal.  Icon generated from the discovery image.   In July 2012, CRTS noticed that this object had started to brighten again. It got brighter, then got dimmer, as LBVs will do. Then in September of 2012 it got brigher again. This time it was classified as a young type IIn supernova. This supernova is in the Constellation Pisces Austrinus.
