Bright Supernovae - 1999

This data comes from IAU Circulars and occasionally more data will be provided on IAU's Astronomical Headlines page. An archive of the 1999 updates and 2000 updates to this page are available.

This is a list of the SN bright supernovae discovered in 1999. Please look at the main page for the latest supernovae. For more information, you can look at the following Supernova Catalogs:

  • IAU List of Supernovae since 1885
  • Asiago's Supernova catalog
  • M. Richmonds's lisf of SNe since 1989

In the year 1999, 198 Supernovae were reported (161 last year), a new record. 49 were found in NGC and IC galaxies (37 last year), and 65 got brighter than 18th Mag (56 last year). The brightest was 1999em at mag 13.1 followed very closely by 1999by at mag 13.2, and then 1999cl at mag 13.6, not even coming close to the bright SN of last year. We had two SN in Messier galaxies, 1999gn in M61 and 1999cl in M88. Reported Supernovae 1999bs, 1999db, 1999dc, 1999cu and 1999cv turned out to be galactic objects, and not SN, leaving us with 199. For a time both 1999ex and 1999ee were visible simultaneously in IC 5179. 11 Extra-galactic Novae were also reported.
