SUMMARY:Mineral Section Lecture on Meteorites
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christian Schrader of Potsdam College will present\nThe Search for Antarctic Meteorites: A Scientific Travelogue\nLecture at 7:30 pm EST.  The virtual meeting will be open by 7:15 pm.  Come early to chat.\nPresentation Abstract: \nThe Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) program has been active since 1976 and has collected over 23\,000 specimens.  Dr. Schrader participated in the 2011-12 season with eight other scientists and will share his experiences participating in Antarctic research.  He ‘ll summarize the history and purpose of the ANSMET program and cover the importance of meteoritics to our understanding of the Solar System.  Through this\, he will recount several studies that have used Antarctic samples to illuminate planetary evolution\, and how meteoritics supports extraterrestrial missions that utilize rovers and remote sensing. \nAbout the Presenter: \nChristian Schrader graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a B.S. in Geology. He then received his M.S. in ore deposit geology and his Ph.D. in igneous petrology\, both from the University of Georgia.  He worked with NASA on lunar exploration and migrated into a NASA postdoctoral position\, during which he served on the Mars Exploration Rover Science Team and began working on volcanic rocks from both Mars and Earth.  He is currently an Assistant Professor at SUNY-Potsdam. \n  \nSee ASRAS e-mail titled “Meteorite Talk Feb 27” for zoom link.  (Or contact Jutta Dudley or Michael Grenier.)

SUMMARY:Free telescope observing at Strasenburgh Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:We’ll hope to observe on April 13th from 8pm to 10:30pm this night with clearing skies expected about observing time. A thin crescent Moon and Jupiter in the West will be the early targets\, and a few dim objects like the Orion Nebula after 9pm as it gets darker. Watch the skies to make sure that clearing sky forecast holds. Dress warm as although the temp is expected in the mid 40’s a brisk wind will make it feel much colder on top of the tower in the wind. \nFree! Park behind the planetarium and just before entering the rear glass doors\, climb the 61 steps to the observing tower. We’ll be here weekly through late Fall if sky conditions are expected to be at least partly clear. We start around dusk and end at 10:30pm. Questions? Call Jim Seidewand at cell 585-703-9876 for more info or late cancellation info.
