Supernova 2001ai in NGC 5278

This is a supernova of the fairly rare type Ic. It was found in a Mag 13.6 galaxy named NGC 5278 which is connected to it's smaller companion NGC 5279. The supernova is imbeded in a bright H II region. We have a DSS Photometry reference image made by Odd Trondal. Icon created from the LOTOSS discovery image.

Light curves and Spectra:
• CfA Spectrum taken 2001/03/29 shows this Type Ic supernova before maximum. Narrow emission lines from the underlying H II region have been clipped for clarity. Contamination from young stars associated with this very bright H II region may be responsible for the blue continuum of the spectrum. The spectrum itself is similar to the that of SN 1994I 5 days before maximum (see Figure 1 of Filippenko et al. 1995, Ap.J. 450, L11).
