Bright Supernovae - 2005

This data comes from IAU Circulars and occasionally more data will be provided on IAU's Astronomical Headlines page. An archive of the 2005 updates to this page is available.

This is a list of the supernovae discovered in 2005. For supernovae which are still visible, please look at the main page for the latest data.

For the year 2005, 367 (a new record!) supernovae have been reported (249 last year).   80 in NGC and IC galaxies (66 last year), 149 got brighter than 18th Mag (126 last year). 17 extragalactic novae were also reported. The brightest supernova reported for the year was 2005df at mag 12.3, followed by 2005af at 12.5, and 2005cs at 13.5.
